Kirkenes, Norway

German-occupied Kirkenes was used as a base to impede the flow of supplies to the Soviets, and as a result was bombed daily. Local miners created this bomb shelter to protect 2500 citizens, but with no electricity or other amenities and insufficient ventilation, the daily hours-long stays were not pleasant.

Bergen, Norway

The Bergenhus Fortress Museum has an exhibit on Norwegian resistance to Nazi occupation in the Second World War. This chair was used by the Gestapo to interrogate and torture prisoners, and you can see the bullet holes. Despite the odds and potential consequences, the resistance continued through the end of the war.

A home where Charles Dickens lived for a few years is now a museum, and has the desk where he wrote several novels, including Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities. A very narrow, steep, and creaky staircase takes you up through the four story building, but there is some cool stuff along the way. I guess you could say it was the best of climbs, it was the worst of climbs.

This statue represents Isis, the Egyptian Goddess of Motherhood. But this heron came along insisting the statue was a monument to him. We just nodded politely and slowly backed away.

The Churchill War Rooms, now a museum, is a sprawling underground complex where Winston Churchill ran the government during the Second World War. The various rooms, including the Cabinet Room in this picture, were vacated in August 1945 and largely remain today as they were left then.
