Balto was a Siberian Husky and the lead dog for the final leg of a famous 1925 dog sled run that delivered life-saving diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska. He spent his final years in Cleveland honored as a hero, and today his remains hold a place of honor at Cleveland's Museum of Natural History.

Wow! The kids had a book about Balto, but I don't recall it mentioning that he spent his golden years in Cleveland.
ReplyDeleteIt's a sad story with a happy ending. A money dispute resulted in Balto and the other dogs being taken by people who treated them poorly for two years. Cleveland businessman George Kimble became aware and started raising funds to buy them and bring them to Cleveland, where they spent their remaining days under much better conditions. And now you know the rest of the story!
