In 1876, when settlers arrived in northern Arizona, the first thing they built was a flag staff, and shortly thereafter they named the town after it. Good thing the first thing they built wasn't an outhouse! Today, near the original site, there is a monument with a replica flag staff that flies a 37-star flag.
