Promontory Point, Utah, is famous for the golden spike marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Council Bluffs, Iowa, disputes that - in 1869 you needed to ferry across the Missouri River and board a separate train. A few years later, a railroad bridge over the Missouri River was completed in Council Bluffs, and they made their own 43 foot tall golden spike to commemorate the true completion of the transcontinental railroad.

Boys Town, Nebraska

In 1953, the boys of Boys Town stuck some stamps on a golf ball and just kept adding on for the next two years, creating the world's biggest ball of stamps.
