Promontory Point, Utah, is famous for the golden spike marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Council Bluffs, Iowa, disputes that - in 1869 you needed to ferry across the Missouri River and board a separate train. A few years later, a railroad bridge over the Missouri River was completed in Council Bluffs, and they made their own 43 foot tall golden spike to commemorate the true completion of the transcontinental railroad.
